Doubleheader

This week you get 2 game recaps... for the price of one!!! lucky luckkyyyyy

So we played the Bullets on sunday and got thouroughly outplayed. And then we lost 3-1, that was a rough pill to swallow. Mostly because the Bullets only had one sub up until halfway through the second and we just couldnt capitalize on our chances. We also lost because people just dont show up to our games, I'm starting to wonder why they even join the team... really, seriously.

Anyways, on to the second game because we really played a much better game on tuesday night and the final score showed.
We faced off at the Pickering Rec against the Oldies; who are, you guessed it, old. Average age for them was probably early 30s, while we have an average age of mid twenties and our youth really helped us win the game. That and the fact that Hackett, Johnson and Stoute combined for 18 points out of a total 20. The only other 2 points our team had were goals by Cowin and yours truly.
Solid game by Baskie, the final score was 7-3 but it really should have been 7-1.
I'm not feeling shoutouts today, I'm still bitter from sunday's pathetic defeat so I'll just say good playing by Baskie and The Big Three.

'Vans top Titans, move back in the win column

The Minivans put last game's ugly debacle behind them and came out with a solid effort against the Titans and got the win to push their record back over .500 and gain a valuable 2 points as they try to keep pace with the Drunks.
Stoute was back from serving his 1-game suspension
Overall it was a solid effort and the Titans just couldnt keep up with the cycle of the 'Vans. The Titans were tired after the first weren't able to get the same scoring chances.
Brawley sniped a goal late in the first and you could tell that helped the Vans a bit because they had gotten their chances in the first but werent able to find a way to beat their goalie (who actually had a pretty solid game. stopped 2 breakaways and had probably 25 or more saves).
The 'Vans struck again early into the 2nd on a goal by Hackett from Stoute and Stabs.
Cheese got tripped pretty badly going into the boards behind the Titans net and wrecked his knee in the process halfway through the second. The Minivans weren't able to capitalize on the powerplay and the score remained 2-0 going into the third.
Halfway through the third period Cheese lit the lamp with helpers from Brawley and Stabs and put the 'Vans ahead 3-0. Good to see no real damage on the knee, cant afford to lose anyone on the team.
2 minutes later, with 4:40 remaining Hackett got his second of the night on a powerplay and put the game out of reach if it wasnt already.
Final score is 4-0 for the Minivans

Shoutouts
- Good game by Baskie, still among the best in the league and that won't be the last shutout this season
- Hackett had 3 points (2G, 1A) and so did Stoute (3A), good game by both of them
- Beavy played solid, that goal is comin any week now
- Stabs played real tough tonight. He was really giving it to the Titans players and they were getting pissed off at him and at their own teammates so that tactic was key.
- Good game team, lets keep this going

Minivans falls to Drunks, lose first of the year

In a great rivalry matchup, the first of several this year, the Minivans faced off against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, the Mighty Drunks. The ‘Vans planned for a hard battle and were yet again outmatched by the speed of the Drunks. Final score, 3-1

The game was a close affair throughout. Although most scoring chances went to the Drunks the Minivans were able to shut down the chances with their solid defence. Baskie also had a great game, doing what he could to help keep us in it.

1st
Drunks goal, 3:05 remaining
2nd
Drunks goal, 43 seconds remaining
3rd
Minivans goal, 7:26 remaining
Drunks goal, 3:23 remaining

Penalties were rare this game, mostly because of the way the Drunks play. They aren’t a rough team and can be muscled out pretty easily, however their speed is what wins them games. Youth, what a great time in anyone’s life. Offsetting roughing penalties and a highsticking penalty for the Drunks a minute into the third period were the only calls the refs made. It was good because they know the animosity between these two teams and they let them play.

No shoutouts this week. Nothing good about losing, let’s not do this again.

Stabs has monster game as Minivans notch first win of the season

After another hard fought game this evening, the Minivans were able to lock up their first victory of the year and move one step closer to that championship title that eluded them last year.
Stabs helped out the team in a big way, scoring one goal and assisting on 3 to help cruise to a 4-1 victory. His energy was evident throughout the game as he was all over the floor pressuring as well as making plays in the defensive and offensive zones.

The first period was a back and forth affair, and yet again the Minivans started the game slow and took a while to get going. They only recorded one shot on net in the first period, fortunately for the 'Vans that single shot resulted in the goal by Andrew Hackett (who is back to playing forward) about halfway through the frame. The Bullets responded late in the first with tally of their own to even it at one.

The second period was relatively quiet. No goals for either team and a few scoring chances for both squads. Things were back and forth but neither team was able to take advantage of opportunities.

It came down to the 3rd period and the Minivans just had more gas in the tank for the final frame. It appeared as though the Bullets would be able to keep up with the 'Vans in the early stages of the game as they (for once) had a full team out to play. They usually played with a short bench and still manged to beat most teams in past seasons. That wasnt the case this time as the 'Vans struck early and often to lock up the win.
Cheese scored first at 8:59 of the third and they got another 3 minutes later. I'm not sure who got the goal though because the timesheet is wrong. It says it was Kells but he wasnt even at the game so that's not right.
With 2 miniutes left in the game, Stoute made a sweet move on one of their best players and blew by him down the floor. The guy must have been pissed because he chased after Stoute and ended up starting a fight with him. It was a pretty good tilt, punches landed on both sides and the refs let them go for a while. Sounds as though they'll only be getting 1 game each which is good so we wont be missing him for long.
The Bullets pulled their goalie late in the game and Winston took a clapper from behind our goal and it may or may not have tipped off of Stabs on its way into the net. The scoresheet credits Stabs but Winston deserves a shoutout for the shot. Smart play.

End result it a win for the Minivans who now stand with a record of 1-0-1 and 3 points.
Next up is a beauty of a matchup. Two powerhouses collide as the Minivans and Mighty Drunks meet up for the first of probably a few great rematches. No more playing only 2 and a half periods. We need to play a whole game to beat these kids.
We have been informed that Ross and Older Brawley are not returning for this season. Tough loss for the team, Ross has deadly speed and Brawley is good playing with his bro.

Shoutouts
- Like I said up top, Stabs had a monster game and he was a big reason for our victory. Keep it up bud
- Baskie kept us in the game and gave us the chance to go home with the win. He's the best goalie in the league
- Stoute gets a shoutout for that fight. He took a nice punch to the eye from that guy but I know he got him back a with a few hooks of his own. I just didnt get a chance to see the other guy's face after the game. Another big part of that play was that Stoute was able to get their best player off for the rest of the game so he also took one for the team.
- New player Winston had a solid game on defence, he had some big defensive stops
- Cowin laid his body on the line for the team. He was blocking shots left right and center, clutch

NEW SEASON

Well another season has begun for the Minivans ball hockey team. We began our run for the championship against an old rival, the Pylons. I've been trying to think of a clever anecdote and the best I could come up with was that this minivan was left out all winter and didnt get serviced. She didnt run very well when we finally started her up and she needed a few periods to warm up. Looks like she'll be back  up to optimum performance soon, just need some of that Castrol Syntech shit and she'll be money.

Needless to say we started off the season pretty flat.
We've got the same old team as before barring any unforseen changes in the roster. Hackett is now playing defence and other than that we're pretty much the same. We also have Jeremy for the summer season this time so that's one more fast player who can deal the ball.
Almost forgot! Baskie is back in net for us after his hip surgery and it couldnt have come at a sooner time. Not to say that we didnt appreciate Maj last season but Baskie is the original Minivans goalie and he's the reason why we either been to the semis or the finals every year with him. He was also the goalie of the year 2 years ago before he took the season off so I like to think he's still the reigning ball-hockey Vezina goalie.

Ok now on to the game.

So like I said we started off slow and you could really see the rust once things got going. I was actually surprising because for once we were being outplayed by the Pylons and that never happens. They got on the board first off of a weak rush that the streaking center somehow flipped the ball through Baskie's legs. I was backchecking to stop the play and shoved the guy but he managed to get his tip on the ball on get it in the net. I blame myself for that goal and vow to make it up to the team. The rest of the first period was relatively quiet. We started to get back into the game with a few minutes to go and we were running on full steam by the end of the first.

By the time the second period started you could tell the Minivans were the better team by the amount of time we spent in the offensive zone and the number of shots the Pylons got on Baskie. I counted less than 10 for the Pylons in the second period and our time on attack easily topped 5-6 minutes. We just couldnt seem to solve their new goalie. He tended to drop low on alot of shots but we were firing the ball wide almost every shot we got.\

The third period is where things finally picked up for us and we started to play like we were used to playing. Kells managed to draw a roughing penalty 2 minutes in and although we didnt score on that powerplay  you could tell by the end of the that the entire Pylon's bench was exhausted. 4 minutes later we got a lucky break with a high sticking penalty going to the Pylons and finally struck for our first goal of the season. Jeremy fed the ball to Younger Brawley and he managed to beat the goalie to tie it at 1. Things stayed the same for the remainder of the third although the Pylons took another high sticking penalty with about 1 minute left that carried over into the overtime.

In OT we had our chances and the ball didnt leave the Pylons zone except for 2 clearing attempts by the defenders. With that said, we just couldnt manage to beat their goalie to end the game. Late in the extra frame Stabs got into a scuffle with a Pylons player and they both got slapped with a roughing penalty. Even though they didnt really do anything I assume it was a pre-emptive move by the ref to avoid a fight. 30 seconds later it happened again but this time it was between Cheese and a Pylons player and the guy tried to hit Kevin in the head with his glove but ended up smacking him with his stick. By then the convenor had seen enough and called the game with 30 seconds left in OT.

Final score 1-1. Minivans walk away with a dissapointing tie against a team we are entirely capable of beating. Looking forward to the rematch.\

Shoutouts
- Beavy has a better shot this year and I have the feeling that this is the season he snipes cheese. He's more than due
- Good to have Baskie back, we missed him
- Cowin also looks like he's been working on his shot
- I think Ross and Older Brawley are on the team too but they werent at the first game. I guess that is yet to be seen.

playoff series

this was a big series for us. two games against the Bullets. we had already beaten them twice or three times in the regular season so we assumed we would be able to outplay them again.
unfortunately things didnt go the way the minivans had planned it and we lost the first game 2-0 on a weak game played by us.
we came back the next game with a sense of urgency but we just couldnt come through with a win in the must-win situation.
after the second loss we were all under the impression that the season was over but i guess not. we scored a total of goals in our series and because the Whalers didnt score any goals in either game they played against the Pylons. because of this we got the wildcard spot and we play the Mighty Drunks this upcoming sunday in a one-game series. this is our shot at redemption, time to make up for the 2 embarrassing losses we had handed to us by them in the regular season. They're the top seed and we know we can beat them, we can beat any team in the division. That's why we're the defending champions.

season aint over just yet...
